Kocher retired in March 2016 from the biathlon competition and, by January 2017, she was enrolled at Mount Royal University as a student in massage therapy. In 2017, Kocher competed in Canmore’s national cross-country skiing championships. She won the 5km competition and was second in the 30-km event. This field included members of Canada’s national cross-country ski team. In honor of Richard Boruta (her former biathlon coach who was killed in an August 2017 climbing accident), she decided to return to cross-country skiing competition and switch to part-time study.
